Trying to Outlaw Atrazine

For the second time in three years, legislation is being proposed to make the selling and use of Atrazine against the law.

Huffington Post | Danielle Ivory | A member of Congress is seeking to ban one of the nation's most widely-used herbicides, which has turned up in drinking water in some states. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) is for the second time proposing legislation that would outlaw any use or trade of atrazine.

Atrazine is a widely used herbicide utilized by farmers to control and prevent weeds from growing among crops, especially corn. Public safety measures have increased through the years because of the health risks associated with Atrazine use. Its detrimental effects on ecosystems have also alerted environmental care groups. With proper handling and application, however, Atrazine can provide benefits for agro-industries in a safe, efficient manner.

When using Atrazine products, farmers in the United States are turning more to conservation tillage and no-till systems. In 2008, atrazine was applied to more than 60 percent of conservation tillage and no-till corn acres.

Atrazine is found in more than 50 agricultural herbicide products. It's an economical way for farmers to keep weeds out of their sugar cane, corn, sorghum and other crops.
